Golden City

Chucked In Music.

Rising from the ashes of Brooklyn’s indie rock contempories, The101, Golden City are the latest band to get ’stuck’ on repeat on my iPod.

The band features The101’s lead guitarist/vocalist Eric Richter (Christie Front Drive, Antarctica) and drummer Jeremy Jones whilst enlisting the services of Jim Lehnhoff (guitar) and Chris Peterson (bass).

Their debut (digital) EP has been recorded in 48 hours, produced by the mighty Ian Love (Burn, Cardia, Rival Schools) and released for free on their Myspace page a matter of days later. It seems Golden City don’t want to be hanging around.

On first listen I thought, “Hey, this sounds like The101, I want my money back!”, but after a few listens the additional textures and layers of a second guitar begin to enrich the gritty, buzzing sound whilst infusing the sweet melodies and toe tapping hooks that made The101, The101.

Maybe it was that grittiness that turned me on to The101 in the first place and it’s great that Golden City have not seemed to have lost any of that in translation.

Too soon to say they are my ‘Favourite New Band’? Hmm, maybe but I’m pretty sure Golden City will stay on rotation for a while longer yet.
